I am deciding that the more I get involved in governmental politics, the more I think I am becoming and Independent, versus aligning myself solely as a Democrat or Republican. I'm glad the Washington state primary finally changed this year and did not make you pick a party with the restriction that you could only vote or select candidates within your party. As I have watched bits and pieces of the conventions over the past few weeks, and reading about other issues online over the past several months, I'm trying to actually "care" about my right to vote and not chalk it up to cynicism that no matter who you vote on, regardless of party, they always over-promise and under-deliver.
There is a lot of good speak circulating about change. When it comes down to it post Bush, whomever is in office, do you think the economy, health care, inflation, gas and the myriad of other issues will ACTUALLY get resolved? Or will this be the same as it always is, and has been for decades? Everything gets hashed over, and over AND OVER again, or blocked by the Senate, House of Reps and so forth. We'll See! I'm not going to hold my breath and turn blue waiting for anything to change with our national government regardless of who makes it into office. There are pros and cons to Obama and McCain.

I'm voting for Jesus cuz he's the only one who knows my situation, the only one who truely cares about us, and the only one who's actually done something for me (and you), and you can be sure he'll keep his promises. Heck with that whole "arm of flesh" jive.
Independent is the route I have taken.
I am happy to hear you're trying to care about your right to vote. I wish more people would actually care and get involved.
I am constantly surprised at the number of people who don't know what's going on. You may not follow every last detail, but it is our responsibility as citizens to care and to vote based on knowledge and not on perception.
btw, in the last few years i have really started to identify more and more with the Democratic Party on many levels.
Every time an election comes around, I try to vote for the best candidate and not base my decisions on party alone. However, after seeing the prosperity the U.S. enjoyed under the Clinton years and then the terrible downturn we have faced with Bush. I am finding it more difficult to side with Republicans.
That being said, I agree with you that all politicians make to many promises that they can't/won't keep, but that is the beauty of our government. All the checks and balances keep anyone from gaining to much power.
In this year's election, I am not looking for someone who will completely overhaul the government (though some days I think that would be nice), I just want to see a new point of view.
