In an effort to aid with our lifestyle and wellness changes, my latest culinary undertaking has been creating homemade yogurt with home grown cultures. I really like yogurt, but everything you purchase from the grocery stores is full of additives, preservatives and other items [crap] for the most part that you just don't need to consume, all to extend it's shelf life for public resale. There is a distinct taste and texture difference that I like with home made yogurt. I am not a fan of the processed stuff and the coating it leaves on my tongue and throat. The little machine makes seven 6oz jars in one batch and the flavorings and fresh fruit concoctions are endless I'm finding out. I think Beep is still a tad hesitant of this new organic treat machine I've purchased, but I'm sure she'll eventually partake. I'm looking forward to having this be a staple in our fridge going forward for healthier meal choices. Today for breakfast, I stirred in just a tad of raw cane sugar and some fresh chopped strawberries. I'm hooked. Thanks to Miss Nancy for giving us the tip on not only a fun, buy healthy habit to undertake at our home.

Yeah, I'm not sure about this. It looked like runny glue to me last night and all I could think of was bacteria...how could that possibly taste good? I will try it, but I can't promise I'll like it!
I can't wait to see how this works. I'm intrigued, but I am with Beep on this one.
on another note, what's up with the 12,234 lettered word verifications to post lately?
I recommend Cascade Fresh for your yoghurt needs. It's the only brand with no added sugar. It's sweetened with fruit juice and it has the consistency of regular yogurt. YUM! The homemade stuff scares me just a little, too.
We both tried Cascade Fresh and thought is was Super NASTY! We both ended up chucking it out. I tried it a second time, purchasing it down by work. Same result, KUCKA...!
Too bad you guys aren't in Idaho next to Hyrum's parents house, you could even make your yogurt from raw cows milk from his parents Jersey cows. :) We have been having our fair share of homemade treats. I have to say that I like the homemade icecream a whole lot better than the homemade sourcream and cheese. We are excited for you guys and your adoption! Congrats!
okay, i can't believe i am just now checking out the blog to see the yogurt maker.
please tell me that things are going a bit better with the yogurt maker. if you don't do it right it won't work. i usually cook mine for 12 hours.
Ingredients
* 4 cups milk (your choice whole-skim)
* 1/2 cup powdered dry milk
* 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
* 4-6 tablespoons sugar (Splenda or honey)
* 1/2 cup yogurt starter (unflavored plain yogurt with active cultures)
# Set 1/2 yogurt starter out to warm to room temperature.

Heat the milk to almost a boil.(I like to microwave in a glass bowl for 5 minutes on high then 2 minutes on medium). Cool the milk (to a "barely warm"/ babies bath temperature) (cool water bath works well). Add dry milk, vanilla and sweetener of your choice; stir well.

Stir in yogurt starter (do not whip but mix very well!).

"Cook" the yogurt using your preferred method and time (longer makes a firmer, more tart yogurt. I like to cook about 12 hours). Chill 4 hours before eating.
