We spent the past saturday up on Whidbey Island at the Naval Air-force Base helping our friends teach the army wives and their families how to cook using dutch ovens. We have really enjoyed learning to do this ourselves and having the opportunity to share it with others. It was interesting being on the base, it's a totally different lifestyle than I could ever imagine. We were right on the water which was beautiful and had a wonderful cool breeze the entire time we were there. So breezy in fact that I was cold and had goose bumps most of the time. So to combat the cold breeze I stood in the sun whenever possible which resulted in a major burn on my arms, ankles, forehead, scalp and most dramatically my ears.

We awoke bright and early at 5:45 am to drive to the base and got there at around 7:30 am. We mostly watched them cook breakfast since they'd already started on the Mountain Man Breakfast which consists of potatoes, bacon, sausage, onions, eggs and cheese. Plus Sylvia's amazing orange rolls which are to die for!

After clean up we took a stroll on the beach and lounged in our camp chairs.

We made lots of yummy desserts. Pineapple upside-down cake.

I can't remember the name of this but it was cherry, chocolate, walnut and coconut cake.

An apple crisp.

And a peach custard.

We had fun looking at the unusual art around the park. Especially in the bathrooms which were decorated with stenciled wood, dolls, photos and mauve throw rugs. I didn't take pictures of the bathroom...that would have been creepy.

For dinner we made Stillaguamish Chicken which is a fried chicken with steamed carrots, parsnips, onions and red potatoes. They also made biscuits with parmesan cheese bread crumbs on top.

Beep and I had a great time. And we both have burns to prove it!
I love cooking in this fashion and learning an alternative way of preparing food. I've learned to cook in the Dutch Ovens, just about anything outside. With a few adjustments you can make the same things you would make in your ovens inside. We decided to take this up for emergency preparedness reasons. When the power goes out in a disaster, we can cook food and help others out in the neighborhood as well, and not let food go to waste.
It's gorgeous there! I guess that's the one benefit of being in the military for those folks. What a nice outing though.
Hey D-man, looking up your pant leg thrilled me in a way I can't explain.
pjmcd -- we may need to have a talk about that comment. Makes me a little nervous.
Wow! What a great experience. The food and the location look lovely!
wow, looked like quite the event. you go...being all service oriented and stuff....no wonder you took a "holiday" the following day! Seriously though, looked pretty dang cool.
